Passive building design embodies a holistic approach to energy efficiency and comfort by focusing on five key principles. Fireside Home Construction, a Certified Passive House Builder (CPHB) and one of the very few in the entire state, integrates these principles into their projects. This includes continuous insulation to minimize thermal bridging, airtight building envelopes to prevent air infiltration and loss of conditioned air, high-performance windows and doors that balance solar gain for heating and cooling purposes, and heat and moisture recovery ventilation systems for efficient air exchange. Additionally, Fireside’s homes often feature minimal space conditioning systems tailored to specific needs. One of their latest projects is an all-electric home, where the proper implementation of Passive House building principles, coupled with a solar system, enables the home to perform better than Net Zero. By integrating these principles, Fireside Home Construction achieves exceptional energy efficiency and comfort levels while promoting sustainability and reducing environmental impact.

Certified Living Building Challenge - Burh Becc at Beacon Springs - Ann Arbor
Tom and Marti Burbeck – in search of truly sustainable living – brought together an architect, builder, high performance building project consultant and multiple building science engineers to design and build Burh Becc at Beacon Springs.
They have succeeded in creating a home that will still be standing 200 years from now and will still be regenerative to the surrounding ecosystem. In late 2017, their home at Beacon Springs Farm, in Ann Arbor, became the second house in the world to achieve a Living Certified ruling via the Living Building Challenge™ certification by the International Living Future Institute. The Burbecks hope their truly restorative farmhouse inspires others to reimagine common building techniques.

Fireside Home Construction has been active in High Performance Building and Energy Efficiency since our beginning in 1996. In those days no one called it High Performance, but the concept was the same to conserve our natural resources, minimize utility costs and to build durable and sustainable structures.
We can provide an inspection and energy audit of any structure and recommend and install energy updates such as added attic insulation, installing insulation in non insulated wall systems, insulating basement floors and walls, installing energy efficient windows and updating or replacing current heating and cooling systems like using Geo Thermal and high efficiency boilers for radiant heating.
